So, why do you get dark circles? And why won’t they go away?

While dark circles can look rather unnerving, keep in mind there’s really nothing to concern yourself about. Dark circles are not a serious health concern, nor are they the result of one. The most common causes for dark circles include:

  • Fatigue – easily the most common reason you’re experiencing those nasty dark pits under your eyes is that you are not getting enough sleep. While the dark circles themselves aren’t something to worry about, chronic lack of rest can cause more serious health concerns.

1. Sleep

Easily the most obvious and most accessible answer to your problem is get plenty of sleep. Of course, this can be easier said than done.

One night of improper rest is usually no big deal, but if you’re struggling with more serious issues like anxiety or insomnia, getting plenty of sleep can become quite the daunting task.

  • Meditation – taking 15-20 minutes before bed to get into a relaxed frame of mind can often make all the difference in getting a proper night of rest.

2. Cool Off

While sleep can and often will improve your appearance in time, it’s not much help when you need to make those circles disappear in the next 20 minutes.

What’s more, when your body doesn’t have enough water (but still has a lot of salt), this can lead to puffiness in the under-eye area. Combined with dark circles, this sounds like a recipe for disaster.

This is also why you get puffy eyes after you weep – dehydration!

While water can’t immediately remedy the situation, it will improve your skin’s appearance over the course of the day.

6. Vitamin K & Caffeine

Caffeine has the wonderful benefit of rejuvenating the skin, and coupled with vitamin K, it can become the worst enemy of your dark circles, studies have shown.

Oily, combination, dry – what if you’re all three?

While that’s not normally the case, it can still seem like a job and a half figuring out what your skin type is.

Oily skin

Dry skin

Alternatively, you could be faced (excuse the pun) with excessively dry skin.

Ironically, this problem is caused by a lack of oil in the skin, which makes it appear permanently dried out, sensitive and flaky.

While dry skin is pretty easy to spot, make sure you don’t get it confused with dehydration.

Dry skin is generally a chronic issue that you will manage, but not eliminate, whereas dehydration is usually a temporary problem.

Combination skin

The trickiest one yet!

People with combination skin can never tell their skin type because they’re usually working with patches.

Usually, their T-zone (nose and forehead) and chin tend to be on the oily side, while the upper forehead and cheeks can be unusually dry.

Ergo combination skin. Of course, this is a particular joy to have because you will actually need two sets of products, for either half of the face!

Normal skin

Usually, normal skin doesn’t struggle with acne breakouts or excessively oily or dry patches. It’s not overly sensitive and usually reacts well to most beauty products.

Acne-prone skin

While most people with acne tend to also be an oily skin type, you might have an acne tendency and still have dry skin.

So in the guide below, we’ll look at how to deal with acne both from the point of view of oily skin types and dry types!

Sensitive skin

Last but not least, sensitive skin is different from dry and acne-prone.

It usually flushes easily and can be easily irritated by skincare products or environmental factors.

Bonus – Mature skin

Okay, all of the above types age pretty much the same.

Wrinkles, fine lines, dehydration, sagginess… you know the drill. But if you’re dealing with mature skin, your entire skincare routine is thrown on its head.

So in this article, we’ll be looking at mature skin as an honorary skin “type”.

So, what’s the right facial serum based on your skin type?

Now that you have a fair idea of how you can identify your particular skin type, let’s take a closer look at what plant-based oils you should incorporate in your skincare routine and why!

Always check the labels as many poor-quality serums contain large amounts of silicone, a relatively cheap ingredient that lends a silky texture but has no added benefits.

Most serums fall into two types – those packed with antioxidants to protect the skin during the day and those designed to repair the skin overnight.

It is worth investing in both!

Oily skin

Again, oily skin is more often than not accompanied by breakouts, which are fun in their own right.

Before we go any further, let’s take a moment to clear up this distinction, since some people don’t seem to know the difference between the two conditions.

Eczema

Eczema is a chronic inflammation that stems from an internal problem. It’s usually a lifelong condition, but people can go months without a flare-up (it’s often worsened by harsh chemical agents, fragrances, and harsh weather).

Rosacea

Rosacea is more common in women than men and often appears in people who experienced acne rosacea during puberty.

Similar to eczema, rosacea is a non-contagious skin condition, which causes the face to flush and turn red, sometimes with small red spots and a burning, itching sensation.

No one yet understands quite what causes rosacea, but triggers include exposure to extreme weather, hot sun, alcohol, spicy food, stress, and heavy exercise.

There’s no permanent cure but natural remedies and treatment, where severe condition, can help to control the problem, and your GP can prescribe antibiotics or gels and creams if necessary that will help to ease symptoms.

Tea tree oil is a very strong oil, and so, should not be used in raw form on the skin, as it may worsen both of these conditions.

Instead, dilute it with a carrier oil, such as coconut or jojoba oil (also wonderful moisturizers, which may help alleviate the dry skin caused by eczema).

2. Calendula Oil

Extracted from the marigold flower, calendula oil is often praised for its soothing, anti-inflammatory properties (2), which may alleviate certain skin ailments.

It’s also believed to reduce pain, which is a common symptom both in eczema and rosacea.

However, since there are no direct studies to link calendula to either eczema or rosacea, we recommend taking this with a grain of salt.

3. Lavender Oil

We’re all familiar with lavender oil for its relaxing, soothing effect. And that’s exactly why it is sometimes used to calm skin ailments such as rosacea.

There has been some research (3) to suggest lavender oil may soothe rosacea skin, while also having a gently moisturizing effect.

As far as we know, there aren’t any studies supporting the benefits of lavender oil for eczema, though.

4. Peppermint Oil

As you probably already know by now, peppermint has that soothing, cooling effect. This is why it’s often used for clogged sinuses, internal issues, but also for aggravated skin issues, such as eczema.

It’s quite a popular alternative remedy for soothing eczema-related itchiness, which is why we’re including it in this article, despite the lack of scientific evidence.

However, peppermint oil may be too aggressive for the face (since it’s more sensitive skin), so avoid using it on the face!

5. Borage Oil

Borage oil has also been used to soothe eczema-caused itchiness and redness.

It contains a fatty acid that is then absorbed by the skin and works as a potent anti-inflammatory agent (4), offering relief for eczema. However, as with the other essential oils in this list, the evidence is limited.

6. Chamomile Oil

Much like tea, chamomile oil has a relaxing and soothing effect when applied to the skin.

This is why chamomile is often recommended as natural, topical cream for dry skin, as well as some skin ailments.

It is believed to be a good soother and moisturizer for both eczema and rosacea. In fact, a 2010 study even found that chamomile oil worked to soothe irritation (5) from atopic dermatitis (aka eczema).

On top of that, it has also been linked to wound healing (6), which may help cases of angry or serious eczema breakouts. So it’s definitely worth looking into!

7. Geranium Oil

Last, on our list, geranium oil is often recommended for its anti-inflammatory effect (7).

It’s an easy-to-use essential oil that is not overly aggressive on the skin and may offer some relief to inflamed cases of eczema and rosacea.

It’s also believed to deter bacteria growth on the skin, and thus facilitate healing.

Final words

Rosacea and eczema can be highly bothersome skin afflictions, and treatment will differ from person to person.

An essential oil that works for another might only irritate you, and vice-versa.
