Basically, your body seems to cave in on itself. And then what do you do?

Like puberty, the worst of menopause does eventually fade, but that isn’t of much help to you in the present moment when all you want to know is:  How to tame all these blasted changes?

1. Balance your hormones

We’ve already established that the reason acne appears on your skin during menopause is hormonal imbalance.

To put things simply, your body produces less estrogen than normal, which is in fact responsible for a lot of the other non-skin-related symptoms of menopause.

Luckily, there are a few things you can do to balance out your hormones.

A strong intake of healthy fats can help boost estrogen production, multiple studies show (1). This is why it may be a good idea to start including more olive oil, coconut oil, and fish oil (2) into your diet.

2. Focus on a hydrating skincare routine

It seems like a no-brainer, but it’s often easier said than done. In truth, hydration is key to replenishing your skin and combatting some of that menopause-related dryness and itchiness.

This means you’ll probably have to switch up your entire skincare routine, to include products that are less harsh and more heavy on the moisturizing.

Cleansers and products that didn’t bother you until now may become too stripping during menopause, so you’ll want to focus on gentler ingredients, instead.

4. Try acupuncture

Acupuncture (7) may not be for everyone, but there is some evidence (8) to suggest that acupuncture may be a worthwhile method to regulate your hormones.

This, of course, can help keep hormonal acne at bay, but also soothe other menopause symptoms, such as hot flashes.

5. Exercise regularly

Dark circles can be one of a lady’s worst enemies. Let’s be honest, we’ve all been there. You’re just ready to go out, you’ve got a great outfit on, your hair looks enviable… yet no amount of make-up seems to fix those dark pits looming under your eyes.

If dark circles are a serious problem for you, then the good news is you’re not alone. Dark circles are more common than we like to think, and chances are, most of the women passing you by on the street have them. So in this article, we’ll be looking at what causes dark circles, and what you can do to fix them!

So, why do you get dark circles? And why won’t they go away?

While dark circles can look rather unnerving, keep in mind there’s really nothing to concern yourself about. Dark circles are not a serious health concern, nor are they the result of one. The most common causes for dark circles include:

  • Fatigue – easily the most common reason you’re experiencing those nasty dark pits under your eyes is that you are not getting enough sleep. While the dark circles themselves aren’t something to worry about, chronic lack of rest can cause more serious health concerns.
  • Genetics – if you keep seeing dark circles when you look in the mirror, regardless of how well you’re sleeping, then it could be due to genetics. To see if it’s so, we recommend looking at others in your family, to see if they have this problem, too.

6 Remedies to Treat Dark Circles that Work

Obviously, which remedy works varies from person to person, depending on each one’s individual circumstances.

For example, you may have dark circles due to genetics, but made worse by fatigue. In that case, getting proper rest will improve their appearance, but not make them disappear completely.

1. Sleep

Easily the most obvious and most accessible answer to your problem is get plenty of sleep. Of course, this can be easier said than done.

One night of improper rest is usually no big deal, but if you’re struggling with more serious issues like anxiety or insomnia, getting plenty of sleep can become quite the daunting task.

In order to facilitate this, you could try one (or more) of the following solutions:

  • Meditation – taking 15-20 minutes before bed to get into a relaxed frame of mind can often make all the difference in getting a proper night of rest.
  • Let go of your devices – perhaps you didn’t know this, but electronic devices emit blue light that alters your sleep cycle and prevents you from falling asleep. This is why experts recommend setting aside your electronic devices 30 minutes before you go to bed.
  • Listen to some nice, relaxing music – because research shows it can encourage rest!

2. Cool Off

While sleep can and often will improve your appearance in time, it’s not much help when you need to make those circles disappear in the next 20 minutes.

In order to understand this next trick, we first need to understand what’s causing the dark circles, from a biological perspective. The reason your skin appears darkened is that the blood vessels underneath the eye have become dilated.

By applying cool water or a cold compress, you force the vessels to constrict, and thus appear less dark.

3. Cucumbers

You’ve surely seen ladies on TV chilling with a couple of cucumber slices on their eyes.

Ever wondered why? Well, aside from being heavily made out of water (cool water, if they’ve been in the fridge), cucumbers also have potent astringent properties.

This means they can gently lighten the skin, and ameliorate the dark circles. This is why, if you wake up with raccoon eyes, reach for some yummy cucumber slices and leave them on for 10 minutes.

4. Lemon Essential Oil

Citrus has a wonderful lightening effect which, similarly to the cucumber slices, can make your dark circles appear less serious.

What’s more, the essential oil can also serve as a nice moisturizer and primer for your make-up, in the morning. Careful not to get it in your eye, though!

You can also try pomegranate essential oil and ylang-ylang!

5. Hydrate

You remember we mentioned earlier that dark under-eye circles can also be a symptom of dehydration. What’s more, when your body doesn’t have enough water (but still has a lot of salt), this can lead to puffiness in the under-eye area. Combined with dark circles, this sounds like a recipe for disaster.

This is also why you get puffy eyes after you weep – dehydration!

While water can’t immediately remedy the situation, it will improve your skin’s appearance over the course of the day.

6. Vitamin K & Caffeine

Caffeine has the wonderful benefit of rejuvenating the skin, and coupled with vitamin K, it can become the worst enemy of your dark circles, studies have shown.

Step 1. Cleanse

How thoroughly you cleanse will depend on what you’ve applied to that portion of skin.

Are you wearing any type of make-up?

Then you’ll probably want to use your make-up remover on the neck/decollete area, as well, to remove any traces of the stuff.

Left on the skin too long, make-up can seriously clog the pores, lead to breakouts and other unfortunate skin issues.

Serums didn’t exist in our mothers’ time, but they are no mystery anymore. They are generally more active than moisturizers and are specially designed to treat and repair the skin.

An effective serum will contain the highest level of active ingredients possible, clearly matched to the problem they are trying to address.

They should not be overloaded with additional ingredients, like sunscreens, that could compromise their performance.

One of the benefits of serums is that they are lighter in texture and are absorbed almost instantly into the skin, making them extremely popular especially in hot climates.

While a heavy cream can leave the skin feeling greasy and weighty, serums make the skin soft and smooth instantly.

Coming from organic sources, many of these oils are not only healthy, but non-comedogenic, meaning you don’t need to worry about them clogging the pores, and creating more mess.

What’s your skin type?

Oily, combination, dry – what if you’re all three?

While that’s not normally the case, it can still seem like a job and a half figuring out what your skin type is.

Quite often, women end up causing more damage to their skin because they’re using improper products.

For example, if you have oily skin, but use products formulated for normal skin, you can end up doing more harm than good.

So knowing your type is vital in choosing the right skincare products.

Oily skin

As its name suggests, oily skin tends to produce a lot of oil.

If you’re always cringing because of that greasy look your face has, then it’s probably oily skin.

If you require blotting paper or a lot of powder, or if your skin always seems to have that greasy glow to it, then your type is probably oily.

Oily types also have a predisposition to acne, so if you’re constantly bursting pimples (which, by the way, you shouldn’t be doing this), then again, you’re probably dealing with oily skin.

Dry skin

Alternatively, you could be faced (excuse the pun) with excessively dry skin.

Ironically, this problem is caused by a lack of oil in the skin, which makes it appear permanently dried out, sensitive and flaky.

While dry skin is pretty easy to spot, make sure you don’t get it confused with dehydration.

Dry skin is generally a chronic issue that you will manage, but not eliminate, whereas dehydration is usually a temporary problem.

Combination skin

The trickiest one yet!

People with combination skin can never tell their skin type because they’re usually working with patches.

Usually, their T-zone (nose and forehead) and chin tend to be on the oily side, while the upper forehead and cheeks can be unusually dry.

Ergo combination skin. Of course, this is a particular joy to have because you will actually need two sets of products, for either half of the face!

Normal skin

Usually, normal skin doesn’t struggle with acne breakouts or excessively oily or dry patches. It’s not overly sensitive and usually reacts well to most beauty products.

Lucky, eh?

Acne-prone skin

While most people with acne tend to also be an oily skin type, you might have an acne tendency and still have dry skin.

So in the guide below, we’ll look at how to deal with acne both from the point of view of oily skin types and dry types!

Sensitive skin

Last but not least, sensitive skin is different from dry and acne-prone.

It usually flushes easily and can be easily irritated by skincare products or environmental factors.

Bonus – Mature skin

Okay, all of the above types age pretty much the same.

Wrinkles, fine lines, dehydration, sagginess… you know the drill. But if you’re dealing with mature skin, your entire skincare routine is thrown on its head.

So in this article, we’ll be looking at mature skin as an honorary skin “type”.

So, what’s the right facial serum based on your skin type?

Now that you have a fair idea of how you can identify your particular skin type, let’s take a closer look at what plant-based oils you should incorporate in your skincare routine and why!

Always check the labels as many poor-quality serums contain large amounts of silicone, a relatively cheap ingredient that lends a silky texture but has no added benefits.

Most serums fall into two types – those packed with antioxidants to protect the skin during the day and those designed to repair the skin overnight.

It is worth investing in both!

Oily skin

Again, oily skin is more often than not accompanied by breakouts, which are fun in their own right.

The first thing you want to do is stop the excess oil from being produced. However, this is easier said than done, since it’s all too easy to slip into the other extreme – excess drying your skin.

So you want to look for oily skincare products that gently dry, without being too harsh.

As it happens, these are also very good for acne-prone oily skin, because they also dry off the pimples. And by stopping excess oil from being produced, they also prevent it from clogging the pores… which is how you get acne in the first place.
